Tortuga Armchair

A rounded, high backed cocoon of a chair, named after the Galápagos tortoise and designed to be withdrawn into.

Isaac Piñeiro designed Tortuga in 2016 around the idea of a shell. It is not a chair for upright conversation; it is for reading, or for dozing, and the enclosing back makes that intention obvious the moment you sit in it.

The shell is injection moulded foam over a steel structure, with memory foam quilting in the inner back and seat reached through a concealed zip. It swivels on a self centring mechanism, on a black lacquered steel base detailed with stained ash.

Back, seat and headrest can each be specified in a different fabric, which is how most of the interesting versions of this chair get made. An optional headrest extends it into a considerably taller piece.
