Tonella began as a nod to Sancal's own history. The company started out making classic French-style chairs, and Note Design Studio was asked to revisit that heritage. Their answer borrows its shape from something much closer to home: the wine barrels of Yecla, the town in southern Spain where Sancal is based.
The outer shell is quilted in straight vertical lines that run down the piece like barrel staves, while the inner seat, back and arms stay smooth and inviting. A slender base of metal rods carries the stave idea down to the floor.
This is the Tonella Soft armchair, the larger and more relaxed member of the family. The seat, back and arms are flexible molded foam, with the plain interior available in fabric or leather and the quilted exterior in fabric, which makes two-tone combinations easy.
The metal base comes in bronze or any of Sancal's extra matte lacquers. A matching sofa, lounge chairs, stools and poufs complete the collection.
