Roll Chair

Two thick upholstered cylinders held in an exposed tubular steel frame. Roll looks like a piece of gym equipment, and that is the joke.

MUT Design took the form of a leg press machine and reversed its purpose, so a shape built for exertion now exists only for sitting still. It was launched at Das Haus during IMM Cologne in 2020 and has an industrial directness that most dining chairs avoid.

The seat bolster uses a dense 60 kg high resilience foam wrapped in fibre, the back a softer 35 kg, both under fixed covers. The frame is lacquered steel with non slip floor stops.

It stacks up to four high, and stacked it stops being furniture and becomes something closer to a small installation, which is very much in keeping with how it was conceived.
