Core looks carved rather than built. A deep, generous seat sits inside a quilted shell that wraps around the back and arms, and the parts fit together so cleanly that the whole chair reads as a single block of material.
Note Design Studio drew on classical furniture for the proportions, then took the piece somewhere contemporary through its surfaces. Vertical quilting gives the outer shell a soft, ribbed texture that catches the light, while the seat stays smooth and plush.
The frame is wood wrapped in polyurethane foam of varying densities, with the seat on 80 mm elastic webbing for lasting support. The solid beech feet are set back so they disappear beneath the body. The cover is fixed and upholstered in fabric only.
Core is part of Sancal's Museo Collection, and the armchair has matching sofas in five lengths. In a neutral weave it reads calm and architectural; in a saturated color it becomes the sculptural focal point of a room.
"Creativity is about searching for what is missing," say the designers, and Core is their take on a classic that still feels new.
