Silhouette Tapestry

Silhouette gathers Jaime Hayon's cast of invented characters onto a single pale ground, faces and limbs drawn in one continuous wandering line.

The piece is hand loomed and then embroidered, so the drawing sits slightly proud of the base cloth. That raised line catches the light and gives the figures a softness a flat woven line would not have.

The palette stays deliberately restrained around the drawing. Reds, yellows, blues and greens appear only as small accents on a cream field, which is what keeps a busy composition calm.

Nani Marquina make it in Afghan and New Zealand wool. It is finished to hang on a wall like a painting, though nothing stops it going on the floor.
